Students:  I am eager to see you all again!  Hopefully everyone is staying healthy and happy.  The key to doing well in any class is to stay in communication and to show effort.  We will continue to communicate and share using Google Classroom and Bloomd.  Scroll down to the bottom of this page or look to the left to see specific pages for more details about your assigned course(s).

Parents:  There are three ways to stay informed about your child's progress before a call or email to the teachers and once signed in, each can be auto-connected to your favorite device(s).  Make sure to choose settings that work for you and ask for help if you need it.  Notifications are the best way to keep up to date with your student’s activities.

In addition to purchasing supplies your student will need (see supply list page), the best way to prepare for proper access before school starts is to make sure that ALL apps are pre-loaded (Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Classroom are each different apps on phones, so each one needs to be added in for items to open properly) and plan to sign in for the following three communication programs as soon as possible.  If anything in an assignment does not open, the first thing to consider is that perhaps the proper app has not been loaded yet.

Students who need assitance can sign in with “Paper” which is a one-to-one tutorial space to get help, or they can stay for daily tutorials afterschool to work with their teachers until 4:00 P.M.

1.  E-Notes

Make sure to go to the E-notes to the left to get messages from time to time sent to you by text or email related to class activities and deadlines.  Each teacher has their own e-notes, so be sure to sign on to the main e-notes for RISD for district notifications as well as each teacher that your child has for classes.  E-Notes are also subdivided into individual classes, so register for all classes to get class specific announcements.  Otherwise, you will only get general messages sent to all of that teacher's classes, rather than something specific.  I use E-Notes for everyone (rarely) and Google Classroom for specific classes (more often).

2. Google Classroom

I use Google Classroom to communicate with students and parents on specific class information, so please register as a parent to keep informed there as well.  I will give you a parent code either by personal e-mail that will grant you access.  Please e-mail me with a request for this AFTER your child is signed in.  Google Classroom will allow your child to store projects from computers at school with devices at home or anywhere with wifi, so that they and you can see assignments anywhere.  Many homework and test communications will be posted on Google Classroom and extra helps and videos will be posted there as well.  Grades in Google Classroom are not a total grade for the district, because not all of our work is done online.  Google grades average over the year, but our official grades are based on weekly accomplishments, so Gradebook (following) is the official grade.  You can set the notifications up how you want.  So, if you only want to know when there is missing work or a low grade, you can do that and not get every single assignment sent to you.  Or you can opt to see everything and later make changes to suit your preferences.

3.  Gradebook

Thirdly, make sure that you get an access code from Naomi Chance to get alerts from Gradebook related to OFFICIAL attendance and grades.  I enter detailed information which can be accessed by clicking on the grade numbers that are underlined in Gradebook.  If you only want to be notified of the official grade for the previous week, and not every single assignment, choose Gradebook notifications, but allow yourself the option to inspect Google Classroom when you see a low weekly grade in Gradebook and then ask your student about the low assignments before emailing me.  Students can click on Turn in without actually turning anything in, so make sure to ask to see their work if they are not getting the grades you expect.  In my classes, students may not correct graded assignments until the last week of each grading period when they can correct one low grade for a higher score as extra credit.  So looking at posted grades early in the week is the best way to check this (I generally post no later than Monday evenings because I grade on the weekends and then post).
