Study Skills
...with Ms. Dulaney
Grades 7 & 8
Course Description:
Students will use this class period to complete assignments for other classes but will also be given options to work academically on various character building, study skills, and self-improvement activities.
Materials and Supplies: Students should have a headset or earplugs when doing audio visual work and it is helpful to have a thumbdrive with at least 16 gigs of RAM to store and transfer a/v clips. It is helpful, that students have access to software on devices by keeping them charged every night. Students should bring reading material and classwork from other classes to this class period to work on.
Assignments and Grading: Students are expected to turn in a sheet that describes how they have used their study skills time weekly and work independently in class using Google Classroom for communication with other teachers. Along with their weekly record of activity the teacher will record comments about any observed off task moments each day and these sheets will be submitted to other teahers to include in their grading. Participation is a weekly grade and students lose 5 points for minor off task behavior and 10 points per class period for major off task behavior. Tickets (with cash given weekly by the teacher), end of six week group rewards, positive calls home, and individual recognition, are all possible outcomes for good behaviors and academic achievement. Positive reinforcement and negative consequences are both employed to guide the student toward good classroom choices. If students do not have work that they feel they need to do, they are expected to read, work on online academic options, or work on offered options to improve their general academic skills based on weekly themes.
